Summer read-a-long

So I'm doing a summer read-a-long and hoping I can keep up. With grad school in full effect I made no promises but I will definitely try. I like reading books with people so we can discuss it. I have never read the series but it's been on my to-read list. Anyhow, if you want more info just let me know or follow through to find out info from Emi!

Reader problems..

I waited so long for book 3 of this trilogy to come out. And it did. And I do not like it. I am on page 259 of 365 and I am so over it.

Book 1 was amazing! I told all my friends to read it.

Book 2 was still really good.

Book 3 is something I am forcing myself to read. The characters are stuck in a boring hell of boringness. I am more than two thirds of the way through the book and I am so tempted to just skip to the end and see how it ends because getting to the end is painful. Where is the spunk these characters had? The fight is gone. They went from I will change the world even if I lose everything and everyone because I am strong and I know the world needs me and needs change! to I'll do some paperwork and hope shit changes. I cannot go on. I don't even care about the main protag anymore. I barely care about my fav character in the book. They have declawed and defanged all the good out of these people. They are flat and their circumstances are boring.

I don't want to put the name of the series out there because I still love book 1. And all over Twitter they still love book 3. But personally, for me, I am just.. bleh.

I think I am going to read something else for a while and try to come back to this later. I have other books waiting for my attention and I want to give it to them. I am not shelving this forever, but for a while.

50 Shades of Grey, or as I like to call it, 50 Shades of Abuse.

I understand not all writers are Hemingway or Rowling. I get that. I am not blogging to trash the writing style, horrible as it may be. And I know authors are not obligated to be morally upstanding. But there is also a level of blatant irresponsibility as a writer and EL James found that level.

The man, Christian Grey is absolutely 100% not okay. What terrifies me is how many women think he is romantic. There is NOTHING romantic about the way he treats Ana.

The media also plays up this book and I can't help but wonder if this is not neglect on their part. They call it "hot", "racy" and a slew of other adjectives. DO THEY KNOW WHAT THIS BOOK IS ABOUT?!

I am publicly on record as saying Edward Cullen is a bad example of how to treat a woman - I tell you this, he is far better than Christian. I am on record as saying Bella is a horrible excuse for a woman.. Ana makes Bella look strong and smart. Yep, you read it here folks, I now say Bella and Edward are not the worst couple I have read about.

I would like to note that I am not mad about Christian being into BDSM. More power to you, we all have our kinks, right? If he wants to spank his lover, spank away! I won't ever be mad if she is in agreement.. ... But I am mad that he blows up her phone for not calling him when he thought she should. Pushy incessant needy demands is NOT ROMANTIC! I am mad that he keeps showing up EVERYWHERE she is. Stalking is NOT ROMANTIC! I am super duper pissed that he threatens her constantly when she says something he doesn't like. Threatening someone is NOT ROMANTIC!

I suppose the appeal of the book is the sex they have because a lot of people have not been exposed to that world. Okay, cool, you can like the sex parts of the book.. but I swear I do NOT understand how Christian is considered romantic AT ALL!

I promise you if that bastard was the last man on Earth I would be alone (well maybe some lusty Sundays here and there, but after that he has got to GO and never speak to me until the next lusty Sunday 3 months from now.)

I honestly think I wouldn't be so fired up about this if I didn't see people saying how amazing and romantic Christian is. I saw something on Pinterest that read "Men say they wish women came with a manual. Here you go." and it was a picture of 50 Shades. I nearly died. Another read "I keep hoping my boyfriend will find my book and go Christian Grey on me." Which part? The obsessive jealousy when another guy talks to you?  The part where he receives your breakup letter and shows up at your house to screw you into taking him back even though you JUST SAID you were done with him?

I know people come with baggage. I get that. I understand that. And I know that nobody is perfect.. but Christian Grey is just... ...

How about this.. if you think he is romantic read this article in the link I am posting. It will take you less than 3 minutes. Please. Just..read it.

Stay safe,
DJ

Books..

I just finished Divergent and let me go on record as saying I loved it! I cannot wait to read book 2 in the trilogy. I will wait though, until after lunch.

I find myself typically liking what the majority of my reader friends like. I'd like to think it is not a sheep mentality, but rather having a set of friends with similar tastes - that is something that makes people friends right? Similar tastes?

One of the books I am struggling with right now is City of Bones from the Mortal Instruments series. I really want to like it! I have been reading it for months now. It just can't hold me. I read it when I have nothing else to read. When there is something else, City of Bones gets put on the back burner. I really want to feel more engaged with the characters. I like some of the City of Bones characters well enough but just.. I don't know - I feel like it is lacking something. What though? How can I get more engaged with the characters so I WANT to keep reading it?

Let me back track a little. Sometimes love stories drive books. And if done right it is totally okay. Matched (from the trilogy that I cannot wait for book 3 to arrive already!)  is a story that shows us the love story is key to the plot, BUT it is not a desperate set of characters who control and manipulate each other. They are strong independent people who love each other in healthy ways. Passionate and strong characters drive the story in a way that you don't feel trapped in a 12 year olds warped fairytale. Does that make more sense?

Anyhow, I just had some thoughts to share. I know we all read differently (and I know some of my friends really like Twilight - and you guys know where I stand so this is no surprise to anyone.) and I am glad we are not clones of each other. But.. what can I do about City of Bones? Any tips? Do they get more exciting as they go because let's be honest - Goblet of Fire was WAY MORE exciting than Sorcerers Stone.

Edit: I take back everything I said! I am SO ENGAGED NOW! So glad I stuck it out because I am completely and totally addicted now. And can we please talk about how awesome Magnus is? Holy cow!

Reading: the right to do so wherever and however

The thing about e-reading is that you don’t get the feel of cover, the smell of the pages.. the nostalgia of curling up with a good book beside a fireplace while it storms a winter snow outside.

The reality of my life is that I don’t have time to curl up by the fire and sip cocoa while I shut off the world and lose myself in a book. I did when I was 19, but I also had very little responsibilities. I now work full time. I attend Saint Leo University full time. I am a single mom of two. I run errands. I cook dinner. I am also a taxi. I am blessed that my daughter does dishes and my son helps with laundry. But I also try to spend some quality time with my kids, even if it’s not as much as some say I should.

So where do I have time to read? Where do I have time to pull a book off a shelf, lower the lights, pour some wine, turn Mozart on low, and forget the world?  I don’t.

What I DO have time for is reading on the fly. Waiting for my child in the dentist waiting room I can pull out my cell phone and use my Nook app. Boom, 20 pages later we leave the dentist go to the next destination. At my sister’s house, her husband calls her and wants to chat from work. I whip out my e-reader and score several pages before I have her attention again. The pharmacy forgot to have my prescription ready – I sit in the chairs and find 11 pages gone before they call my name. I’m about to pass out when I finally get to bed. I cram 10 pages in my head before falling asleep reading. In the old days I scrambled through the paper book to see where I might have left off. My electronic reader bookmarks for me. All is well.

So whereas I still love hard bound books, and I still dream of having a massive library in my house some day when I have one big enough, I also live in the real world. So many people are living in the romantic ideas of hard books that they shun those of us trying to scramble for time to read whenever and wherever we can. Isn’t the entire point of reading – to read? Why does it matter if my book is hardbound, paperback, or even an e-book? I. Am. Reading. I have every right to get lost in a story as you do even though I can’t always lug around a hardcover just incase I can squeeze in 10 minutes to read. I would rather read on my e-reader than never have time and opportunity to sit with the traditional books. Do not judge me. I am a story lover just like you. I deserve your support as a fellow reader – not your attitude because you’re a paper snob.

Reflections on Harry Potter as DH.2 is set to debut..

Avid readers are usually the first to discover wonderful little known treasures and then have full bragging rights of “I told you to read that 2 years ago.” when the book blows up into a monumental success. I never got to have those bragging rights with Harry Potter. I was, in fact, extremely late to the party.

Of course I knew about Harry Potter. The first time I heard of it was when Sting arrived on the red carpet with his children and said they couldn’t wait to see Philosophers Stone because they had been reading the books as a family. Hm, a book Sting reads with his kids? Sounds interesting. I put it on my “to read” list.

But I didn’t get around to it straight away. In fact, I didn’t get around to it until the release of the final book. Shocking. I know.

I would read about my friends attending release parties. I am a fan of such parties so I fully applauded their dedication. Still, I didn’t have time to read all these books. I would “get to it later.”

Then something happened almost on accident. My daughter sent me a Sorting Hat quiz. I had a vague idea of what the Sorting Hat was, since Harry Potter mania was everywhere – I at least knew the basics. I took the quiz and got Slytherin. My friend Becky commented she was surprised since I am so much like Hermione. “Explain.” I asked. She replied “Hermione and you have a lot in common. You both study very hard. You both hang around with more boys than girls, but you don’t want people to forget you’re a girl. She is really loyal to her friends and she will stand up for what she believes in.” I smiled. This is certainly part of how I see myself. So the hat quiz was wrong since I am clearly Hermione who belonged to the house of Gryffindor.

Later that night I talk to my daughter and tell her Becky said I am like Hermione. My daughters reply was “A bossy know-it-all?” .. .. .. well that was certainly NOT the description Becky gave. Admittedly I am also a bossy know-it-all, but I had to get to the bottom of this Hermione thing.

Deathly Hallows had been released less than 2 full days when I Wiki’d Hermione. I know, I know, in hindsight that was a rather bad place to go. Still, most people on the net (read: except for a few douchebags) were kind enough to post spoiler alerts. I somehow forgot how some people are not so kind. So I dove into the article in Wikipedia about Hermione. I found out EVERYTHING about her. Even the end of the 7th book.

I didn’t realize at the time that I had read the ending. I skipped on over to the Houses section. By definition I was clearly Slytherin. I had some traits of the other houses, but when it came to it – I was Slytherin. I went back to the Hermione article and clicked the link to Lupin, who had caught my eye earlier. I nearly fell in love with him there on the spot. It was there that I realized I had read the ending. I clicked out of the browser fast.

That weekend I went to my sisters. She had the first few books and I borrowed them. I knew how the story ended, now I needed to know how they go to the ending. I read the two she loaned me but couldn’t wait to borrow the rest so I bought them. I read them like a starving person. I was so hooked.

The fandom came hard and fast for me. It was like I had been a fan forever. The complex worlds, the deep characters – it was just so amazing. I, like the rest of the world, wanted to go to Hogwarts.

Then I began to really explore more of the fandom by attending the Yule Ball at Dragon*con. I met some wonderful people there. People I still look forward to seeing every year.

I met people in another online place I went to. Some of those wonderful witches are still my friends to this day. I don’t know them in the flesh, but online. Still, online friendships can be very intense and very fulfilling. I love those girls.

Something about Harry Potter is that I get to indulge fully into the fandom. Like my Star Wars obsession, there are conventions, music, people playing dress up.. even other people who will do bad fake European accents with me when we are in costume.

I have attended midnight opening premieres in my tiny town with a very large group of friends on more than one occasion. For the Half Blood Prince premiere I even made the front page (Slytherin takes down a Ravenclaw!) of the newspaper. We take two rows of seats when we fill the theater. My Harry Potter peeps are amazing.

I tell my children that some day they can tell their children how they saw Harry Potter on the big screen at premiere openings. It’s an experience their children will not have (unless we some day get prequels! But that’s another blog.) I feel blessed to have seen Star Wars when it originally came, and now Harry Potter. I may have missed some things along the way (book release parties, the first few movies) but overall I still got to participate in this fandom. It is something I just hold so dear.

As a writer with a little world in my head, I sometimes try to imagine how emotionally overwhelming it is for Lady Rowling. The moments of seeing your characters come to life, seeing your world in full color on a screen 30 feet high, it must be the most amazing feeling in the world. I think I would cry of happiness all the time. But more so, one of my goals as a writer is to have other people fall in love with my characters as much as I love them. I want people to cry when they do, laugh when they do.. and Jo has achieved that. We love Harry and Hermione and Ron and Neville and Remus just as much as she does. That is what it’s all about. The money must be nice, but that isn’t all there is to it. It is so much more. She brought us a world that we love so passionately. Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, The Burrow, Malfoy Manor, all of those things are a gift to us. It is a gift that nobody can ever take away. It is a gift that will never get lost, never get chewed up by the puppies, never be stolen by an ex who “forgot” to return it. It is ours. Harry and his world will forever remain.
